On Voting Morally
Earlier this year I was driving through farm country on a major road when I saw a sign posted in a field that said:
Vote Morally. God hates abortion and gay marriage. The practical political implications here are obvious: voting for Republicans is the only moral choice.
I respect the desire and right of people to advocate for a society better aligned with their values. However, I refuse to ceed the moral high ground to people (including members of our own church) who act as though the above two topics are the only ones that deserve consideration. Even putting aside the complications of these topics, it represents a rather restricted view of morality. Moreover, if your position is that I should vote against things that God hates, then it seems to me that I should take into account things that scripture actually says he hates. You can only say that God hates abortion and gay marriage by implication, since there isn't any place in scripture that says that he hates them. In contrast, scripture does specify some things that God hates. For example, Proverbs 6:16–19 lists seven things the Lord "hates":
1. A proud look
2. a lying tongue
3. hands that shed innocent blood
4. An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations
5. feet that be swift in running to mischief
6. A false witness that speaketh lies
7. he that soweth discord among brethren
I mean....come on. Why shouldn't these things enter into the equation?
Why doesn't it matter that the president has injected poisonous lies into our politics, especially about elections, and ignited a national narrative not unlike that of the Lamanites who claimed that the Nephites had stolen leadership from them?
Why doesn't it matter that the right wing has become increasingly and openly racist and eugenicist [1]?
Why doesn't it matter that the administration is randomly killing people on boats, for supposed crimes that would not receive the death penalty in our own country? To date at least 227 people have been killed without any kind of legal proceeding. This is simply murder.
Why doesn't it matter that the administration protects federal agents who abuse (or even kill) citizens in violation of their rights and the law?
Why doesn't it matter that courts can no longer trust information provided to the court from the Department of Justice?
Why doesn't it matter that the MAGA/MAHA wing has weakened protections against childhood diseases like measles?
Why doesn't it matter that grinding the faces of the poor is practically a Republican sport [1]?
Why doesn't it matter that the president and his underlings glorify war?
Why doesn't it matter that the president and his underlings decided to start a war with Iran as a demonstration of manly swagger, acheived nothing good, and so blithely dismissed the killing of 120 school girls?
Why doesn't it matter that immigrants and refugees are being treated with cruelty (yes, even people who came here "the right way"), and families destroyed? Why doesn't it matter that with the president's approval, the richest man in the world yanked federal foreign aid in such an abrupt manner that, even if the estimates are off by an order of magnitude, they will be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people?
Why doesn't it matter that the president and other government leaders are personally profiting off of government actions?
Why doesn't it matter that the president is effectively selling pardons to people convicted of fraud (sometimes more than once), and otherwise pardoning people who commit crimes in support of his political success?
Why doesn't it matter that the administration has done everything it can to distract, delay, and minimize the facts surrounding Epstein's crimes?
Why doesn't it matter that much of the Republican party looks past domestic abuse and various types of sexual assault, especially when committed by its politicians?
Why doesn't it matter that elected Republicans continue to uphold and protect these things?
Why doesn't it matter that Ken Paxton will be the next senator from Texas (because of course he will)?
Why should I believe that God hates abortion and gay marriage more than he hates these things?
Notes:
1. Oh, come on. Don't play coy with me.
